I have not had a Fukien Tea in my collection since selling the one I had for 12 years at Bonsai Under the Oaks 2 years ago. I was not looking to replace it either since I’m trying to downsize my collection. However when I saw this particular one it called to me and since the price with right I decided to get it. It had good bones but needed some refinement.

The first thing I did was give it a quarter of a turn to the left in order to create a better nebari with more surface roots exposed. Not only did changing the angle of the front help the nebari but it created more movement towards the top of the trunk. The second thing I did was remove the 1st right branch which was going up and looked like a bow. Then the third thing I did was reduce the height which created more movement in the apex.

The fouth thing I did was shorten all the branches.

In the future I will remove the 1st left branch and replace it with one the of the new growths underneath it which are in a better position. I will also remove and replace an awkward back branch with hopefully some new growth.

Also there is a little reverse taper just above the nebari on the right side. I’m going to try to deal with this by placing vertical slits with a knife in the trunk in that area. Fukien seem to heal their cuts with a lot of cambium which sometimes gives them a gnarly look. I’m hoping this will create a swelling in the area of the reverse taper. If that does not work I may remove veritcal slivers of cambium aiming for the same resutls.

I have not repotted the tree yet, but this is what it currently looks like still in its orginal pot.

The growth at the bottom is to hopefully fatten up the trunk!

Recently a member had a rain tree that suddenly started turning yellow and dropping leaves. This, as one could guess, caused him some panic.

This is his tree.
I assured him this was a natural occurrence. And showed him my tree.

Mine looks much worse. As you can see.

It is the time of year that passes for winter here in Orlando and the Brazilian rain tree, which is usually a heavy drinker, almost stops using water at this time. I believe it goes dormant (as much as a tropical plant can go dormant) during winter and will defoliate if given too much water. It must be noted; this yellowing and dropping leaves can also happen when nematodes are present. But usually only when the tree was field grown or spends too much time on the ground.
One way to tell the difference is to look for dormant buds at the nodes.

This is a healthy bud and I, for one, am not worried about my tree.
I will give it a dose of iron to green it a bit and ignore it.
Until it is time to protect them from the cold.
Which is another posting.

Nov 12 and 13 were gorgeous days and a trip to Fort Myers were so promising. After two and plus hours (some can do in two hours) we arrived at the Wigert’s Bonsai nursery. There were many people in the event; however, the organization was superb. From the parking lot, sales area, bonsai displays, any place were carefully planned to make a very pleasant experience to everybody.

The demos, critique, personal collection along with the warm attention given by Andrea, Erik and all the people working there made the event a real treat.

The styling competition was fun! Ten people participated and we could feel the tension in the air with great involvement of all. Pedro Morales chose the winner.

Wigert’s Bonsai is a beautiful place with many choices of trees to buy and an inspiring awesome private collection to spend hours in delight!

On Sunday Oct-16, after spent some hours at Durastone nursery and watched Jim Smith doing a demo styling beautifully a salicaria clamp to a Banyan tree showing in a few words his experience and vast knowledge with savy comments, I thought about the message from Karate Kid movies (original ones).

Jim Smith actions and words have a deep meaning that go beyond the now and material world. His understanding of human condition combined with the great artistic talent bring the best from the people who can see or feel his energy level.

When he says the beauty is in the eyes of each person, it brings the hope and joy to all bonsai enthusiasts.

There was a crossing root at the front of the Banyan tree at the end of the styling, and most of people were favorable to take it out. Jim said leave it as it is. It gives character. Paying attention to his remarks, I realized that his point was to show that some features are part of the tree. We don’t need to change completely the character of the tree.

I learned more about bonsai and a lot about wisdom that Sunday, plus the secret of longevity with active life!

Today I decide that it was time to work on some trees. I started with the silver thorn (Elaeagnus sp.) I acquired it from a 3 gallon pot. I styled it as a bunjin but like many of my trees I left too many branches on it. When I began it looked like this:

After care deliberation I decide to remove the lowest left branch, one branch going towards the front, one going toward the right, and two in the back. I didn’t jin the ones I removed in the back but I did jin the others. The result is below:

Even though I removed 5 branches it still looks busy but I think I’ll wait and bring it to a workshop before I remove any more.
Also, did you notice I weeded the pot? Less is more!
